Marble benchtops bring natural character and a distinctive finish to Melbourne kitchens, bathrooms and entertaining spaces. Over time, however, everyday cooking, spills and cleaning can leave the surface looking dull, marked or uneven.
If your marble has lost its clarity, developed pale marks or absorbed a stubborn stain, replacement may not be the only option. A professional assessment can establish whether cleaning, honing and polishing can improve the existing stone.
Why Marble Benchtops Lose Their Finish
Marble is a calcium-based natural stone. Its surface can react with acidic substances such as lemon juice, vinegar, wine and some household cleaners. This reaction can create etching: a dull or lighter-looking mark where the surface finish has been altered.
Other common causes of deterioration include:
- Oil and food spills that penetrate unprotected or worn areas
- Fine scratches from cookware, utensils and abrasive cloths
- Soap and cleaning-product residue that builds up over time
- Water deposits around sinks and taps
- Uneven wear in frequently used preparation areas
Different marks need different treatments. Applying a stronger cleaner or polishing compound without identifying the problem can make the finish less consistent.
Stains and Etching: How to Tell the Difference
A stain is generally material that has entered the stone. Depending on the substance, it may appear as a darker, yellow, brown or coloured patch. An etch mark is surface damage caused by a chemical reaction and often appears as a pale, cloudy or dull area.
Watermarks, metal marks and accumulated residue can look similar, so appearance alone is not always enough to identify the cause. A suitable treatment starts with checking the stone type, finish, location and depth of the mark.
Avoid experimenting with vinegar, bleach, acidic descalers or abrasive pads. These products can damage marble or affect nearby finishes.
How Professional Marble Benchtop Restoration Works
Professional marble benchtop restoration is selected according to the condition of the surface. A typical process may include:
Assessment: Identify the marble, existing finish, stains, etching and any previous coatings or repairs.
Deep cleaning: Remove suitable surface contamination and residues using stone-appropriate methods.
Honing: Refine the surface with controlled abrasives to reduce etching, fine scratches and unevenness, where the stone condition allows.
Polishing: Restore the chosen level of clarity or sheen, from a refined honed appearance to a higher gloss where appropriate.
Sealing: Apply a suitable impregnating sealer when recommended for the stone and its intended use. Sealer can help reduce absorption, but it does not make marble stain-proof or acid-proof.
The correct sequence and finish depend on the marble and the result you want to achieve.
Looking After Marble After Restoration
Once the surface has been restored, a few everyday habits can help maintain its appearance:
- Wipe spills promptly, especially wine, citrus, coffee, oils and sauces.
- Use a cleaner formulated for natural stone and follow its directions.
- Use chopping boards and coasters to reduce direct contact with food and drink.
- Choose soft microfibre cloths rather than abrasive scouring pads.
- Keep acidic products and general-purpose bathroom descalers away from marble.
- Ask for advice about maintenance intervals based on the stone, finish and use.
Routine care helps, but it cannot reverse etching or deeper surface wear. Those issues may need professional attention.
Restore Your Marble Benchtop Before Replacing It
If your marble benchtop is structurally sound but looks tired, restoration may offer a practical alternative to removing and replacing it. The best option depends on the depth of damage, access, edge details, previous repairs and the finish you want.

We had an issue with the grout in the shower. Huge chips out of it and it was just old in general. Also the shower leaked every time we used it. I contacted Ryan and he was professional, on time and delivered a high quality or work. Even coming back the next week to fix an unexpected issue (big gaps between the floor and wall). The before and after pics show the difference. We are very happy so far.Posted on Google![]()

Highy recommended Indie from Aus Floor Care. I had a marble bench top refurbished. It had etch marks and had been epoxy impacted in its early life. He took extra care to remove epoxy layer and then bring life back to the marble. Good communication and cleaned up and very politePosted on Google![]()

Incredible Restoration – Saved My Bluestone! After having bluestone crazy paving laid, I had a nightmare experience with a previous tradesman who applied a dark-tinted sealer and then unsuccessfully tried to grind it out. The stone looked ruined. I called Ausfloor Care, and Indie was fantastic. He explained exactly what needed to happen to fix the damage. He managed to restore the bluestone to its beautiful natural color and applied a natural-look sealer that truly highlights the stone. We absolutely love the finished result. If it wasn’t for Indie and his team, I would have given up and tiled over the entire area. Highly recommended!Posted on Google![]()

Indie and his team are absolutely 5 star!! Indie repaired the cracks in our terrazzo kitchen floor and has honed and polished it to a beautiful finish. The team were extremely professional, polite and friendly and went above and beyond with helping move furniture. They arrived on time and worked so hard to finish the job on time. I cannot recommend Indie highly enough. I will certainly be using him again when we need any stone maintenance in the future.Posted on Google![]()
